Dr. Jukka Takala

President, International Commission on Occupational Health, Finland

Dr. Jukka Takala, Adj.Prof. FFOM (Hon) is the President of the International Commission of Occupational Health.

Dr. Takala has 40+ years of global experience in Workplace Safety and Health (WSH), in six countries and three continents, in industry, and national/international civil service, UN, ILO, EU. He speaks six languages to varying degree.

Dr. Takala was the first Executive Director of Workplace Safety and Health Institute of the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) of Singapore from 2011 and continued in MOM as Senior Consultant until end 2017. From 2006-2011, he was Director of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). He was the coordinator of all EU regulatory agencies in 2010-11. Dr. Takala also worked in OSH-Administration, Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Finland 1973-78 and 1981-83.

Dr. Takala held several positions in the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Africa, Asia, and at ILO Headquarters as Director of the Global SafeWork Programme in Geneva, responsible for ILO OSH Conventions, GHS process and ILO Encyclopaedia from 1978-2006.

TS2 - Regulating OSH in future of work - New forms of work, workers, employers, workplaces and working relationships

Labour markets, business models and technology are changing at a fast pace. New forms of work using new technologies such as platforms, the increase of self-employed and often blurred employment status and the interconnection between companies at national and cross border level makes it difficult for regulators to effectively govern occupational safety and health, both in terms of responsiveness of legislation as well as the regulatory capacity of compliance mechanisms. The technical session will debate these challenges and introduce innovative practices on how are countries preparing for the future of work.
