Dr. Thuthula Balfour

Head of Health, Minerals Council South Africa

Dr. Balfour is a qualified medical doctor and public health medicine specialist with an MBA and Diploma in Occupational Health. She has a wealth of management experience that spans 30 years, 17 of which have been at a strategic level and 12 in the mining industry. She is the Head of Health at the Minerals Council South Africa and was recently appointed to serve on the Ministerial Advisory Council for COVID-19.

Dr Balfour has led several initiatives in the industry with massive improvements in monitoring performance and outcomes in key areas that are critical to the image of the industry.

She serves on several boards including Department of Labour’s Compensation Board and Department of Mineral Resource’s Mine Health and Safety Committee. She also serves on the board of the South African Business Coalition on Health and Aids (SABCOHA). Dr. Balfour was named as one of the Top 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining in 2018.

When reliable OSH data is not available, policy-makers, employers, and workers lack crucial knowledge for the prevention of occupational injuries and diseases. This session will examine data gaps at the global, national and enterprise levels and will highlight new and innovative tools for collecting and using OSH data.
