John is currently a Vice President with the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association. He is well known for his work with employers where he designed and implemented many successful human resource and health and safety programs in the municipal, aviation, manufacturing and marine industries.

John is responsible for providing leadership of the BC Maritime Employers Association training, safety, recruitment and data analytics systems for members and their employees. BCMEA trains over 3200 employees per year in technical equipment operation, inventory control, leadership and safety. He holds an MBA from Royal Roads University, is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), is Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) and is a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors Program and holds the ICD.D designation.

John sits on the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO) representing Canadian employers’ interest on all aspects of the world of work. He is an advocate through Federal Employers in Transportation and Communications (FETCO) on Part II of the Canada Labour Code and sits on the Minister’s OSH Advisory Committee. He sits on the Board of the US based National Maritime Safety Association and is the Chair of Board for the International Cargo Handling and Coordination Association which is a recognized NGO to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). He previous served as a public interest representative and was the Chair of the Board of WorkSafeBC and Director on the Board of the Canadian Centre of Occupational Health & Safety. He also spent 9 years as adjunct professor at UBC teaching Modern Safety Management in the Masters of Occupational Hygiene and Environment Program.

Breakout Session A – Organized by Canada: Chairs’ Panel on a Culture of Prevention – is it the answer to COVID-19? 

In this panel, the current and past Chairs of the World Congress International Organizing Committee will join together with social partners to explore the premise that a strong culture of prevention has supported the ability of workplaces to respond effectively to COVID-19. Through the lens of those sectors that were deemed “essential”, the panel will explore what role a culture of prevention played in responding to the COVID-19 emergency, and what new lessons this experience offers about the importance of a prevention culture to occupational health and safety globally.
